Freddy survived a blaze in Brazil's forest. He lived 45 days without having to eat anything. And would have been taking his last breaths if The Animal Avengers hadn't found him. They not only helped him survive but presented him with a beautiful, 3D shell.
“Freddy was the first tortoise in the world to receive a fully rebuilt hull and the first creature that we, as a newly formed group of animal rescuers, decided to help,” said Designer Cicero Moraes, a member of the volunteer group based in Sao Paulo.
Freddy survived a fire in Brazil's forest, and his life was at stake. He lived 45 days without having to eat anything. And would have been taking his last breaths if The Animal Avengers - a group of four vets, one dental surgeon, and a 3D designer - hadn't found him. The unmerciful bush fire burnt most of Fred's shell. They not only helped him survive but presented him with a beautiful, new shell. His saviors also gave him the name.
The team behind this:
This is how his burnt shell looked like:
Cicero Moraes designed a 3D computer image of its shell with the help of various Freddy's pictures. He told Fantastico, “It took about 40 photos [to build a model and reconstruct the shell]. We took a healthy animal, took the same 40 photos, reconstructed that animal in 3D, and put it into the computer.”
Then Moraes's team member Dr. Paulo who's a dental surgeon, printed it out using a 3D printer - the virtually constructed shell turned into reality. He said, “Just to make [a] single piece it took 50 hours of printing, which is much more than we imagined.”
The cute creature then had his prosthetic shell on proudly. The team decided to make it look natural and asked an artist to fill in some colors. The 3D shell looked real! Apart from the team, the artist did a great job; you can see below.
