Disney has announced that its about to air the sequel, Sister Act 3 of the original 1992 movie, Sister Act starring Goldberg. Whoopi will be seen in this sequel too!
The movie Sister Act has one of the more financially successful comedies of the early 1990s. Its sequel, Sister Act 2 was released in 1993. Most of the original cast reprised their roles in the sequel. Now, almost 3 decades later, Disney officially confirms that there’s going to a Sister Act 3!
Moreover, for the fans, the greatest news is that the film, like its original film, will star Whoopi Goldberg.
On the 10th of December, 2020, it was confirmed that Sister Act 3 will premiere on Disney+, the corporation's streaming service.
Goldberg, who was around 30years old in the original movie, has turned 65 now. She will return to play her role as Deloris Van Cartier once again: a singer who was forced to enter the witness protection program and was subsequently relocated as a nun in a convent.
Though the news of Sister Act 3 is official, no details about the content of the third installment have been revealed so far.
The original movie was a great hit at the box office, but the sequel in 1993 was not as successful, yet both the films have kept a cult following in the early nineties.
Disney revealed that the new sequel is being helmed by producer Tyler Perry. There is no release date as yet.
Announcing the film on Twitter, Disney wrote: "Sister Act 3 is in development! @WhoopiGoldberg returns to star and produce, with TylerPerry as a producer as well. Sister Act 3 will premiere on @DisneyPlus."
As reported by CNN, Goldberg talked about Sister Act 3 in an interview with James Corden back in October.
"For a long time they kept saying no-one wanted to see it, and then quite recently it turns out that that may not be true," she said.
Goldberg said the first two films were "fun and it feels good."
"People might want to see it. So we're working diligently to figure out how to get the gang together," she added. "Listen - bad singing, great singing. OK singing and then nuns. What's better than that?”. As per CNN, other projects that are set across its television and movie platforms include the Alien TV series, which is set to air on FX, and Disney+'s Rangers of the New Republic - a Star Wars spin-off series that's set with the Mandalorian universe.
Sister Act 3 will mark Goldberg and Perry's fourth collaboration.
