"After delivery, I thought him holding the device was interesting, so I took a picture. I never thought it would receive so much attention."
A picture of a newborn baby boy holding his mum's patently failed coil contraception has gone viral. The 34-year-old mum - who already has two other kids - had the intrauterine device (IUD) inserted two years ago. However, the coil did not do its job and she became pregnant, giving birth at Hai Phong International Hospital, in Hai Phong, Vietnam.
After labour, the baby came out clutching the IUD tightly in his tiny hands.
Tran Viet Phuong, an obstetrician at the hospital, noticed the striking development and took a picture that was shared last week on the hospital's social media channels, where it received thousands of likes, comments, and shares.
Phuong said: "After delivery, I thought him holding the device was interesting, so I took a picture. I never thought it would receive so much attention."
Contraceptive coils are supposed to prevent sperms from being able to fertilize a woman's eggs by releasing copper or hormones after being inserted into the uterus, but Phuong said the mother's IUD may have been dislodged from its original position, rendering it ineffective.
Clearly the mom had not imagined this scenario. But she is presumably now relieved her son was born healthy, weighing 7lbs.
