A rogue puppy stole the show at a Utah high school track meet and won the relay race. The sprinting pooch ran a blistering anchor leg in the 4x200 meter relay and nearly tripped her two-legged competition.
A four-legged spectator wanted in on the action during a Utah track meet. Of course, just joining the relay race wasn’t enough, the overachieving pooch had to nab first place!
Logan High School senior, Gracie Laney, had the final stretch of track all to herself. It looked like she was about to win the final leg of the women’s 4×200 relay race at the Grizzly Invitational track meet in Logan, Utah. But, an unexpected sprinter stole the spotlight.
“At first, I thought it was another runner and I was surprised because we had a pretty good lead,” Laney told KSL. “As it got closer, I thought, ‘That’s too small to be a person.’”
Murray High School junior, Kate Heywood, was warming up for her upcoming race when her family’s dog, Holly, broke loose and headed straight for the track. A skilled sprinter, Holly quickly sped past the fourth, third, and second-place runners. With her eyes on the win, the dog continued sprinting, ultimately taking the lead anchor position just before crossing the finish line—much to the crowd’s amusement.
This doggo may have dropped the best anchor leg you'll see today🤣🐶— MileSplit US (@milesplit) April 19, 2021
The moment Laney realized that there was a small dog on the track, her priority changed from winning the race to her own personal safety after she nearly tripped over the animal.
She then began to worry about the dog itself, frightened that she'd accidentally impale it with the spikes on her shoes.
"When the dog crossed in my lane, I was afraid that I was going to trip over it, and then I was worried that I was going to spike it with my spikes," she recalled. "It all happened so fast."
Needless to say, the video went down a storm on YouTube.
“Who let the dog out?” one YouTube commenter wrote.
“That dog deserves a d1 scholarship,” added another.
One viewer wrote: "I love how the crowd just kept cheering louder when the dog came out."
Meanwhile, a fourth wrote a comment we can all agree with: "That must be Usain Bolt's dog! Because he got those afterburners !! [sic]"
