A great news is in store for Friends fans out there. Yes you heard it right! A reunion special episode is on its way for the fans and the entire cast of Friends are in the process of finalising their agreements for a reunion special.
The friends cast are in the final stages of negotiation for an hour long reunion episode. The six stars , Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer will reportedly earn between $2.25 million and $2.5 million for the show. According to the news, the cast were initially offered $1 million each but they turned down the offer.
The reunion episode is one hour special one that will be an hour long. The episode will be a 'a retrospective and interviews with the cast' and potentially hosted by the Queen of hosts Ellen DeGeneres.
Though speculation and not confirmed but according to a representative of HBO, the stars will earn closely $3-$4 million for their appearance.
Last month HBO Max's Chief Creative Officer Kevin Reilly gave an update on the reunion status at the Television Critics Association expressed some struggles making it happen. He told the audience, 'There is interest all around, and yet we can't get the interests all alighted to push the button on it.'
The huge pay to the cast does not really come as a surprise as the show is labelled as the most profitable TV catalogs among streaming sites. The stars were already making $1 million for the final two seasons of the iconic series in the early 2000s, which ran from 1994-2004.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, WarnerMedia acquired the TV show for $425 million ($85 million a year for five years).
Over the years the cast has been seen often reconnecting and making their friendship public but this is the first time in 16 years that they will re-appear on-screen together. On Thursday, Perry became the final Friends star to create an Instagram account and was welcomed by Jennifer and Lisa.
After Lisa broke the news that Mathew has joined Instagram, Jennifer jokingly commented on her post: 'Yay Matty! Could you TAKE any longer?' with a shocked emoji and a heart, while Courteney Cox simply wrote 'Yes Matty!!! and a heart.
The news of a reunion is actually very big as the creators of the show have always made it clear in the past that any reboot or renion is out of the question. During a Friends 25th anniversary panel at Tribeca TV Festival in the past, the show's co-creators Kauffman and Crane shut the door on possible reboot or scripted reunion that would revisit the characters and stories from the hit series.
“We will not be doing a reunion show, we will not be doing a reboot,” Kauffman said. “The show was about that time in life when friends are your family,” she explained, adding that life changes when your family becomes your family.
And a reboot? No. “It’s not going to beat what we did,” Kauffman said.
Added Crane: “We did the show we wanted to do. We got it right, and we put a bow on it.”
